Mary Timony Signs to Lookout!, Readies New Album Nick Patch reports: It's been three years since her last album, but Mary Timony is back with a new record, a new label, and probably a new haircut (elsewise her hair's gotten fucking long). Ex Hex is the former Helium frontwoman's third solo record, and the follow-up to 2002's Matador-released The Golden Dove. Most notable (at least, until we hear the album) is Timony's jump to new label Lookout! Records. See, up 'til now, her shit'd been coming out on Matador-- all the way back to Helium's 1994 debut, Pirate Prude. Not anymore! But perhaps it's all part of their overarching plan to invest only in "sure things" these days. Which is to say, those of you who shop somewhere other than Best Buy can look for the album in mid-April. It will come bearing the following tracklist: 01 On the Floor 02 Friend to J.C. 03 Silence 04 In the Grass 05 Return to Pirates 06 Hard Times are Hard 07 W.O.W. 08 9 x 3 09 Moon 10 Harmony 11 Backwards/Forwards Having promised a rockier affair this time out-- and snagged Fugazi drummer Brandon Canty to produce it-- Timony appears poised to deliver. Contrary to earlier reports, Ex Hex sees the foxy geek goddess rocking a two-piece, enlisting the help of Medications (and former Faraquet) guitarist Devin Ocampo. "The songs are mostly written on guitar and drums this time, as opposed to the Wurlitzer that I'd been using to write songs the past few years," Timony told Pitchfork by email. "I feel like we really tried to focus on performance on the record, and Devin and I really pushed each other to play our best while recording. It's been inspiring for me to play with him." original link (credits: darksong from the LJ community) |
